The Public Vote is a twist that featured in Survivor: Unfinished Business. It enabled the wider public to vote for all the castaways and twists that would feature in the game, instead of being decided by and . The twist returned in Survivor: Entitled vs. Earned as part of The Earned Trials to determine one member of the final cast.
On February 22, 2016, it was announced that the Second Chances theme would be returning after a thirteen season absence, and that the cast of one-time non-winners would be voted into the game by the public. All who applied to participate would be given a shot in the poll, but would have to make the top 20 in order to make the season.
On March 7, 2016 it was revealed that there would be 60 candidates in total fighting for a place. The poll opened on March 8, 2016, with each person getting the chance to vote for 10 people they would wish to see play again every day. It was decided that only the top three people from each season would be allowed to make it, with anyone fourth from that season or below excluded to allow for a fair and balanced cast. Furthermore, all ties would be resolved by production.
It was also revealed on March 8, 2016 that the public would also be voting for three past twists to enter the game from three individual categories, with a total of 21 twists on the table to vote for. This poll opened for voting on March 15, 2016.
On April 29, 2017 it was revealed the public vote would feature again for Entitled vs. Earned, as part of The Earned Trials, which determine half of the final cast, this time allowing the one top-voted person a place on the season.
