Tribes of the Future is a twist that appeared in Survivor: Ayia Thekla. The twist revealed that a tribe switch would be occurring at some point later in the game, and what the switched tribes would be on Day 1, granting all of the castaways knowledge of who they'd be forced to play with later on. The twist returned in Survivor: Indonesia, but due to Fused Together, it was the starting tribes that were revealed.
On Day 1, it was revealed that there was going to be a tribe switch at some point during the pre-merge phase of the game. It was also then revealed what the new tribes would be, allowing castaways to know who would be on their tribe later in the game. The twist forces castaways to determine who they need to keep around for the long-haul, and who they need to take out early, to ensure that they are in a good position when the switch happens. Because of this twist, there is a very high chance that when the switch occurs, the new tribe numbers will be uneven. The way the Tribes of the Future are divided is also not random, and are already confirmed before the game begins.
- In Ayia Thekla, the swap occurred on Day 5 and no tribes were dismantled during the swap, leaving all three tribes still in the game. The new Larnaca tribe had four members, while Nicosia and Paphos both had five members each.
- In Indonesia, the tribes were introduced on Day 4, after the conclusion of the Fused Together twist. The Malang tribe had eight members, while the Palopo tribe had nine members.
